This is intended to be a writer's blog. It has nothing to do with the academic disciplines of ecological or other related sciences. The name riparian was chosen because of its meaning—the lush interface that nurses diverse life forms. This is apt for the variety of articles that this blog expects: a nursing ground for thoughts about our world.

Various definitions are being used to define a riparian zone; a simple search will yield those. A riparian zone is an ecological interface where terrestrial (upland) and aquatic (waterways, streambanks, riverbanks, lakes, floodplains) ecosystems meet, creating a lush and diverse natural ecotone (transition area). It is the thin, living green border that runs along the banks of streams or rivers or surrounds freshwater bodies. This defining critical interface sets the tone for the blog.

The word "Riparian" originates from the Latin ripa (riverbank). The ancient Romans astutely noted that neighbors living directly across a flowing water current from each other frequently clashed over water rights and access. Over centuries of legal definitions, the root word gracefully transformed from describing a physical riverbank edge into our modern word for competitive stakes: "rival".
